In honor of the anniversary of The Americans With Disabilities Act. An American who didn’t let the loss of her leg stand in her way. (OK, that’s an excuse – I didn’t want to wait for her birthday, which is in April.)Born April 6, 1906. Virginia Hall: America’s Greatest Female Spy – Historic Heroines. She spoke five languages, and worked at several consulates across Europe, but the Foreign Service kept rejecting her application. Mostly it seems, because she was raising the alarm about Hitler long before most Americans – and especially those in the US Foreign Service – were taking him seriously.
While hunting in Turkey, she had an accidental discharge of her firearm, which resulted in her losing her left leg below the knee. (She was climbing over a fence.) She named her wooden leg Cuthbert. Despite the injury she volunteered as an ambulance driver in France during the Blitzkrieg. After the Nazi occupation of France, she made her way to England and joined the Special Operation Executive. (SOE was competitor to MI6, but protected by Churchill.)
After rigorous spy training designed to test the mettle of even the most resolute male candidates, she returned to Vichy France undercover as an American Journalist (prior to the US having joined the war). There, at great personal risk, Virginia, worked doggedly to collect intelligence, help form the French Resistance and rescue downed RAF pilots. She organized sabotage efforts on German supply lines and successfully planned daring POW prison escapes. All the while, knowing that capture would mean imprisonment and certain torture at the hands of the Vichy Police or German Gestapo.
She was on the Gestapo’s “most wanted” list.
After America got into the war, she “transferred” to the OSS (which later would become the CIA). And did more of the same. By this point the Americans wanted experienced agents to prepare for the invasion everyone knew had to come eventually. But since she was known to the Gestapo, she disguised herself (and her limp) as an old woman.
Upon her return to occupied France, Virginia immediately jumped back in with the French Resistance working tirelessly as a covert wireless radio operator reporting critical intelligence that could affect the D-Day invasion. … While on the move, Virginia used her previous experience organizing resistance efforts to assemble a fighting force of French guerillas that could support the Allied Invasion. Many initially refused to take orders from a woman, however, as she demonstrated her ability to provide valuable weapons and explosives with London’s full confidence, their sentiments rapidly changed. When the Allied Troops invaded Normandy on June 6, 1944, Virginia and her resistance army of over 400 volunteers sprang into action. Destroying train tracks, disrupting supply lines, attacking German troops and committing other acts of sabotage, Virginia and her force slowed the Nazi response to D-Day in any way possible.
After the war, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the only civilian woman to receive one. The recommendation, and citation – from the desk of Harry S. A native of Baltimore, Virginia Hall Goillot is perhaps best known for her heroic service in the British Special Operations Executive and the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II, but she actually spent more time in CIA.
She died in 1982. In 2017 the CIA named a training center in her honor, and a commissioned painting of her hangs in CIA headquarters.

After a spate of terror attacks in 2015, Israel opted to loosen its firearms restrictions so that more citizens could help to defend themselves and their communities.
According to a recent report from Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the Ministry of Public Security is considering further liberalizing the country’s firearms licensing process.
Under current Israeli law, prospective firearms licensees must demonstrate a “personal or public need, as decided by the authorities” in order to obtain a license.
As explained in a November 2016 document published by the Ministry, other eligibility requirements include Israeli residency for at least three years, fluency in Hebrew, and good health. Applicants are also required to complete a firearms training course and undergo an interview with the firearms licensing bureau.
The 2015 changes relaxed the guidelines on who qualifies for a firearms license. Specifically, the guidelines made more active and reserve officers in the Israeli Defense Force eligible, along with civilians who have completed one of several security guard courses.
By the end of that year, there were a total of 264,679 firearms licenses in the country of 8.5 million. Private firearm licenses accounted for 143,943 of the total, while security guards accounted for the other 120,736.
Characterizing the new proposal, the Haaretz article noted that the new measure would “allow any citizen with infantry firearms training to be eligible for a gun permit.”
Israel has a system of compulsory military service, therefore a significant portion of the population has received some firearms training. In concert with this shift, the Israel Police and Knesset (Legislature) Interior and Environment Committee are working on a more comprehensive firearms license training course, upping the mandatory 2 hour lesson to four and a half hours.
The Ministry estimates that the change will increase the number of citizens with gun licenses by 35,000 to 40,000.
Discussing the matter with Haaretz, Knesset Member Amir Ohana explained,
A civilian who carries a gun is more of a solution than a threat, and serves as a force multiplier for the security forces. Even in the most optimistic scenario, we won’t have a Special Ops unit in every neighborhood but during the terror wave we saw that skilled civilians save lives…. A law-abiding citizen with the basic necessary skills should be allowed to protect himself and his surroundings.
Ohana’s recognition of the role an armed citizenry can play in thwarting terrorist violence is similar to the sentiment expressed by former Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble to ABC News in 2013.
Noble stated,
Societies have to think about how they’re going to approach the problem…. One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that. Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.
The law enforcement official went on to add,
Ask yourself: If that was Denver, Col., if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly?… What I’m saying is it makes police around the world question their views on gun control.
It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?’
This is something that has to be discussed… People are quick to say ‘gun control, people shouldn’t be armed,’ etc., etc. I think they have to ask themselves: ‘Where would you have wanted to be? In a city where there was gun control and no citizens armed if you’re in a Westgate mall, or in a place like Denver or Texas?
Moreover, the FBI has recently acknowledged the potential for armed citizens to combat mass violence. An April 2018 FBI report titled, Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2016 and 2017, stated,
Armed and unarmed citizens engaged the shooter in 10 incidents. They safely and successfully ended the shootings in eight of those incidents. Their selfless actions likely saved many lives.
The enhanced threat posed by active shooters and the swiftness with which active shooter incidents unfold support the importance of preparation by law enforcement officers and citizens alike.
As the Ministry of Public Safety makes clear on their website, Israeli “law does not recognize a right to keep and bear arms.” However, it is encouraging that the small nation is moving in a direction that will allow more of its citizens to exercise their inalienable right to self-defense.

Inventor Wins Free Speech Battle with DOJ to Distribute 3D-Printed Gun Designs
Cody Wilson’s Defense Distributed and Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) reached a settlement with the Department of Justice allowing unfettered publication of 3D gun files and other information in a case centered on free speech.
Breitbart News reported that SAF filed a suit on behalf of Defense Distributed on May 6, 2015, seeking to free Wilson from a federal mandate that he not post blueprints for The Liberator pistol online.

SAF sent a press release to Breitbart News, explaining details of settlement, saying, “The government has agreed to waive its prior restraint against the plaintiffs, allowing them to freely publish the 3-D files and other information at issue. The government has also agreed to pay a significant portion of the plaintiffs’ attorney’s fees, and to return $10,000 in State Department registration dues paid by Defense Distributed as a result of the prior restraint.”
SAF founder and executive vice president Alan Gottlieb said, “Not only is this a First Amendment victory for free speech, it also is a devastating blow to the gun prohibition lobby. For years, anti-gunners have contended that modern semi-automatic sport-utility rifles are so-called ‘weapons of war,’ and with this settlement, the government has acknowledged they are nothing of the sort.”
Gottlieb added, “Under this settlement, the government will draft and pursue regulatory amendments that eliminate ITAR control over the technical information at the center of this case. They will transfer export jurisdiction to the Commerce Department, which does not impose prior restraint on public speech. That will allow Defense Distributed and SAF to publish information about 3-D technology.”

An SAS team was saved after a brave military dog fought off a jihadi who attacked a patrol in northern Syria.
The unnamed Belgian Malinois, a fierce breed of sheepdog known for its bravery, had been out on a routine patrol with a team of six crack soldiers from the SAS.
They had just entered a small village in a convoy of armoured vehicles when they got out to continue the recce on foot.
But soon after they left the safety of the convoy, they were attacked on all sides by waiting jihadis in what was described as a ‘360 degree ambush’.

‘When the team entered the building they saw the dog standing over a dead gunman.
The incident was said to have taken place two months ago, but details of the dog’s bravery can only be made public now for security reasons.
‘His throat had been torn out and he had bled to death,’ the source continued, ‘There was also a lump of human flesh in one corner and a series of blood trails leading out of the back of the building.
‘The dog was virtually uninjured. The SAS were able to consolidate their defensive position and eventually break away from the battle without taking any casualties.’
The SAS commander in charge of the patrol credited the dog with directly saving the lives of all six of the men.

Man Killed By Armed PSU Officers Had Valid Concealed Carry Permit
Two of Washington’s colleagues and at least one witness say Washington, 45, was black.
Keyaira Smith, a witness who took video of the moments leading up to Washington’s death, told OPB that he was “trying to be a good Samaritan” by breaking up a fight.
Video footage shows what appears to be a black object attached to Washington’s right side as he’s seen pulling one man off another. Two PSU police officers can also be seen.
“The gun slipped out of the holster when he had fallen, and I think he may have tried to retrieve it,” Smith said. “Then they said ‘gun.’”
That’s when police fired, she said.
Sgt. Brent Laizure, a spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that Washington had a valid concealed carry permit.
Washington was a Navy veteran and an employee with the United States Postal Service since 1998. He worked with the collections unit as a letter carrier at the main office in downtown Portland, where he also served as the union shop steward.
Washington was married with three kids and one grandchild.
“He loved those kids, he was crazy about them,” said David Norton, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 82. Norton knew Washington for seven years.
“He was a big personality. He always had a lot to say. He kind of had a larger-than-life personality. He was always very animated and exuberant. And if you ever worked with the guy or knew the guy, you would never forget him.”
Norton said Washington was with co-workers the day he was shot.
PSU officials are already preparing to defend the university against a lawsuit. Leaders convened a closed-to-the-public executive session Friday afternoon to discuss potential litigation. The session came even as leaders knew little about the victim, other than that he likely wasn’t a PSU student.
Multiple agencies, including the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and the Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detail, are conducting an investigation into the incident. PSU and PPB have not officially identified Washington or provided many details about the incident.
University President Rahmat Shoureshi said he’s asked the university’s Campus Public Safety Chief to conduct an internal assessment and evaluation of the incident.
The Portland State University Student Union is calling on the University to disarm campus officers with a rally scheduled for Sunday — the three-year anniversary of when the university first armed Campus Public Safety Officers.The university’s board of trustees cast a controversial vote in 2014 to employ sworn armed police officers on campus.
“Everyone who has expressed dissent over the years to the armament of CPSO and creation of a police force knew that one day this decision would result in deadly violence, and we know that it will continue to happen so long as campus security remain a deputized and armed police force,” PSUSU wrote on its Facebook page. “There’s no way around it – this is how policing works.”

1. When you are under arms, one must think Tactical at all times.
2. I was not there. But unless the fight is totally out of control. I.E Use of say a use of rock or knife. Or that somebody is completely out of the fighting skill league. It is best to let the Cops handle it.
3. A sad fact is that a lot of Cops today are very trigger happy.
4. While it was admirable & honorable to want to help. One has to remember to weight the cost & risks AT ALL TIMES!
Bottom line-I really feel bad for the family. But later on they can take pride in this incontestable fact. That they had a good man in their family. Who tried to do the right thing!
