To paraphrase General Patton, what a waste of Fine Infantry. In my humble opinion.
As the 1st Marine Division was one of Americas best Division. In my opinion was in the same league of the following units of WWII America.
Like the Big red One US Army 1st ID (Infantry Division) , The 3rd ID, 4th Armored Division, The 82nd Airborne, the 101st Airborne Division or the 2nd Marine Division.
So to waste such a fine unit for a very questionable target like Peleliu. Which turned out to be of very questionable use later on.
Leads me to question the Brasses thinking. Yeah I know its easy to do this in hind sight. But other folks at the time also asked the sames questions.
